Self-mastery through the ancient wisdom of yoga and Torah
"Be bold as a leopard, light as an eagle, swift as a deer, and strong as a lion — to do the will of your Father in Heaven."
— Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers)
True yoga practice is the practice of self-mastery. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root "yuj," meaning to yoke or unite — to bring together body, mind, and spirit in harmonious alignment with our highest purpose.
At Peaceful Presence Yoga Studio, we draw on both the ancient wisdom of yoga and the timeless teachings of Torah. Both traditions share a common vision: that the purpose of human life is to refine oneself, to overcome the ego's lower impulses, and to live in service to something greater.
The Mishnah in Pirkei Avot teaches us to be:
This is not merely a poetic description. It is a practical guide to character development — what yoga calls the cultivation of the self.
Andrew Kahn is a Kohain — a descendant of Aaron, the High Priest of ancient Israel. Aaron HaKohein was known above all for one quality: he loved peace and pursued peace. He loved people and drew them close to Torah.
This legacy inspires our work at Peaceful Presence. The dove — our studio symbol — represents this same spirit of peace. Just as Aaron worked to resolve conflicts, to soften hardened hearts, and to build bridges between people, so too does our practice seek to cultivate peace within each person who walks through our door.
The greatest battle in life is not fought against external enemies. It is fought within. The yogic tradition calls this the battle between the higher self (the soul, or neshama) and the lower self (the ego's appetites and fears).
True yoga practice gives us the tools to win this inner battle:
When we bring these practices together with sincere intention, we begin to experience the peace that is our birthright.
